The Community Canvas was an interactive art project that toured New Zealand alongside professional artist Yaniv Janson’s exhibition, Abstract Acrylics. Funded by Creative New Zealand, the tour traveled to Rotorua, Dunedin, Raglan, Wellington, Auckland CBD, Waiheke Island, and the North Shore to make art accessible and welcoming for everyone. At the heart of the tour was the community canvas idea—a large-scale, collaborative painting experience where visitors were invited to pick up a brush and co-create a massive piece of art together. By encouraging people of all ages, backgrounds, and artistic abilities to add their own unique colours and brushstrokes, the initiative broke down traditional gallery rules and turned viewers into active creators. This hands-on project celebrated neurodiversity, fostered social inclusion, and showed the power of collective art to bring entire communities together.
